The museum itself is located within the grounds of the Bundaberg Botanic Gardens. The museum building is actually Bert and Nance Hinkler’s house “Mon Repos”, which was dis-assembled in Southampton and shipped to Bundaberg for reconstruction in 1983.
Bert Hinkler was one of Australia’s solo aviation pioneers. Among his many achievements are the first solo flight from England to Australia and first solo flight from Canada to England via the South Atlantic. Take a look at that one on a map!
A replica of one of Hinkler’s own designs, the ”Ibis”, is on display at the adjacent Bundaberg Historical Museum. Two of Hinklers aircraft are also displayed in the Queensland Museum, Brisbane. They are Avro Avian, G-EBOV and Avro Baby, G-EACQ.
The Hinkler Memorial website is most educational.
