Sitting on the Hudson in New York is the decommissioned USS Intrepid aircraft carrier. It has been turned into a floating aviation and space museum. One aspect I have noted about the US air museums is that they have taken pains to preserve many of the pioneering and prototype airframes. A case in point here is the display of an F-14 Tomcat pre-production machine, as well as the Grumman Intruder that was used for many flight tests. Included in this list is the Rockwell Space Shuttle 'Enterprise' that was used for unpowered flight and ferrying tests. While this particular airframe did not go into space, it was an essential part of the flight test regime for this groundbreaking space programme. This history of the Intrepid itself is well covered by displays and, as always, it is fascinating to wander around such a large and purpose-built floating air base.
