What can I say about this place? It is astonishing! Just go and see it. It is located just a short walk from the centre of York. The museum is housed in an old roundhouse that still has the central turntable and radiating tracks. On these is an amazing collection of steam, electric and diesel locos and rolling stock. Centrepiece of the collection is the beautiful blue Pacific Class 'Mallard', the holder of the steam speed record. My second favorite was the early Deltic diesel loco. You can also see a working replica of Stephenson's Rocket, a Japanese Bullet train, and much, much more. The biggest surprise was the North Shed, an old workshop that now houses a huge collection of model trains, railway memorabilia, historic artefacts and such. I could have spent a day just in the North Shed!
